We reached 100!!!!!

NOT 100 days of school, (not yet.) This is actually day 95. 

100 PAGES in our Math notebooks! 

When I said to my students, "Turn in your journals and number page 100", several class periods actually cheered! 

I love that they are excited about what we do in our notebooks!!!!

So, like always, here's my PHOTO look into our notebooks!

I start every unit off the same way. 

We have a pocket for incomplete work and a table of contents PER unit. 

It works wonderfully! 

Ratios flippable and left side activity.

This has been the best way for me to teach the metric system. I feel it is out of place this year, but that is beyond my control. My students did well with it and remember our mnemonic fairly easily.

We also include a page for warm ups. We just add them as we do it. 

And egads! A blank page. Not sure what happened there.

This year I used the foldable from Live. Love. Math for my left side.

It is designed differently and this is not how I have done it in the past. I won't do it this way again  either, but it's a long story how this appeared in our notebook...

Properties and Left Side Activity 

Sometimes a foldable is created together as a class. 

I have since made these for printing next year.

Both of these pages are from Gina Wilson at All things Algebra.

We have been told  that we need to use Cornell notes. This is an attempt. We only glue the top down so we can add multiple pages or write on the notebook paper underneath it. 

This is not my favorite way to do vocabulary, but it was part of Math Writing for my Daily 3. 

One of my most favorite lessons about quadrant planes and coordinate pairs. 

This year I had to include the Cornell notes style. Students did write a summary as well. Their teacher hasn't gotten around to that.  (hee hee)

More Cornell Notes.... 

I am not a fan of so much paper on top of paper, so instead of using the Cornell Notes paper, We did our foldable on the right side and I had them draw in the questions and summary portion. 

I made these quick notes with a 4mula Fun template.

Anyway, had my students do a Venn Diagram for their own notes and then write a summary. 

I am making Cornell Notes fit my class and how I like to teach. we're just mixing it up! 

Sorry that many of my "writing" samples are not complete, but my students have their complete. They have been writing fools. I do check these and they have been getting daily grades for these too. Math Writing is part of my Daily 3 and they have to meet these expectations. 

I gave my students a paper clip and they used their pencils to spin the spinner. Students had to give one fact to a partner about the angle that the spinner landed on. It was a review activity. 

Then they wrote a summary about angle types. 

 And here it is, our 100th page!!!! 

The book mark is from Live Love Math. 

My students have been using it along with her task cards for area with composite figures. 

New Flippables WITH Left Side Activities

One thing I love about being off for the week is I can find time  to create more products. 

I have completed both of these with my students recently and am thrilled to finally have them ready to share! 

The first is a ratio flippable and left side activity using task cards. 

The second is a new lesson for our new standards here in Texas. 

I introduced addition and multiplication properties. I almost always do vocabulary with foldables. Then students used their foldable to complete the matching. It was actually their warm up the following day. 

I hope you will enjoy them as much as we did. I am inspired, so I am off to create more!

New Students and Interactive Notebooks

I got a new student this week. We are about to finish our second six weeks of school 

I am on page 59 in my interactive notebook. The day she walked in, we were using our notebooks for new notes AND classwork. No need to panic because I have been creating extra notebooks with my classes. 

I have one notebook for myself, and a second notebook that just started off as a sample, but has everything in it.  I have been creating them along with each class period. When students are absent, I use their journals so they don't miss out on important notes. 

Since I had this second extra one, I just handed it to my new student and viola', she is right up to par with us. 

Then I was sad because now I only have one extra notebook. 

So, I got another journal and numbered my pages and checked into my "extra foldables" and have started another interactive notebook.

These extras are from me making them with my students even when there are no absences. Some are examples I made before teaching, etc... I don't have everything we have made, but I have a good amount. I had enough that starting this journal in case another new student comes will be worthwhile in the end. 

 I don't know if I will go back and add everything, but at least now I can continue working along with my classes. 

• The extra notebook was perfect for my new student. 

• The extra foldables I kept were perfect for me to add to another journal. 

I felt like both processes were win win!!! 

8 weeks of Interactive Notebooks- TONS OF PICTURES!!!!

I cannot take it one more minute. I have to write a post, a good quality post!!! 

I have a huge list of other things that need to get done, and we have baseball games tonight, but I miss blogging. I miss sharing what my students are doing. 

So, I am putting my foot down and I am writing this post!!!! 

Plus, for those of you who I let down with not getting my post about left sided stuff, you can see what I have done. (I am so sorry for that BTW) 

We have been in school for 8 weeks and our interactive notebooks are in full force. I LOVE THEM!!! 

I will let the pictures do the talking! 

 I hate blank pages, but we are revamping our "Brain Dump" since our standards have changed this year. This will NOT remain blank. 

 These are students resources given to us by our State. We practice using them so they use them on the state test.

 I shared about my students writing in their journals this year as well here. 

All of that was review. 

Then we started our first unit. 

 Left side: their classwork!!! 

 After each assessment our students complete a "data dig" and keep their info in a pocket so we can compare how they did on future assessments. (I know, I need to blog about those data digs, they are so effective!!!)

 The left side here are their warm ups. I create a page for each unit because I don't want them thinking warm ups are not important. 

 Page 30 and 32 were homework assignments. We are trying to do some flipped classroom assignments. This was my first. It wasn't hugely successful, but it did work. (For those who did the homework) This is a work in progress still.

 This is now a 5th grade skill for us here in Texas. But, my students didn't receive it, so I had to squeeze it in. 

This is where we are right now: Operations with Integers.

We have only talked about multiplying and dividing so far. 

We start adding and subtracting tomorrow! 

My students are actually going to come in tomorrow and work on these word problems. 

What I love: 

I love the unit table of contents. It keeps us up to date. 

I love the colors. I have been fortunate to get my hands on some fun colors. 

I love the foldables. If you know me, there is no explanation needed. 

I love the use of the left side for student work. It's hard sometimes, but it gets done. And when it gets put on the right side, who cares? It's student work people!!!! 

What I dislike:

I am on day 38 of school and I am in Unit FOUR!!!!

But, that's another post and I don't have time for that soap box!
